Hello Everyone,

During the month of January we received 18 new beds and new mattresses that were made possible through the Annual Appeal and the Employee Giving Campaign.  I know many of you are enjoying your new beds and mattresses.  The staff worked very hard together as a team to get the new beds in and the old beds out.  We all tried to make as little commotion as possible so we did not disturb your day.  I really think that the transition went well. Thank you for your cooperation in this endeavor.

The sun is starting to shine outside and some of the snow is starting to melt.  Many of us are getting “Spring Fever”.  We need you to start brainstorming on some events or activities that you may be interested in doing now that the weather is a little warmer.  If you can come up with any ideas, please be sure to tell the activity staff so we can make some arrangements.

The restorative therapy room has changed their hours and they will be available later in the afternoons for you to exercise if you are interested.  In one of the past Resident Centered Care meetings, you as residents, shared that you would like to exercise but you were not always able to make it down in the mornings or early afternoons.  Please feel free to use this facility if you have an opportunity.

The Easter Egg Hunt is coming up on March 22nd, please be sure to invite your family and friends to join in the fun day of festivities.

Hope you have a great March!

It’s “The Pointe at Sunrise”.

I am so happy to announce the naming of our Phase I Building at long last.  After much deliberation it is exciting to tell you Joylyn Rippke’s naming suggestion has been accepted for our new independent living building! We had over 75 names submitted by our residents, family members, friends and employee team members.  The engagement of all of our community in helping christen the newest part of us is indeed heartwarming!  We thank Joylyn, who works with Sunrise residents through our Activity Department and we thank all those who submitted names for consideration.  There was lots of thought and love put into this selection.  The Pointe represents convergence and is representative to the center of things, as well as the points on the Sunrise logo.  It is exciting to call the project by name as it moves forward!

New Human Resource Director Is With Us:

Cheryl Messershmidt has been named our Human Resources Director.  She began her responsibilities Monday, February 18th.  We welcome Cheryl to our Sunrise Retirement Community.  Cheryl has experience in working with people in many different capacities throughout her working career and volunteer experience.  She is every inch a “people person” and is excited to be a part of our mission of service.  Please meet and greet her in the very near future.

Char Hesse recently has been appointed to the position of Marketing Director for The Pointe, our independent living apartment homes, which are currently being constructed. Char, for the present time, will continue working part-time with training in the Human Resources Department, thus helping to meet our HR needs, as well as orientating to her new position in marketing. Exciting times are in store for Char and the rest of the Sunrise Community and staff with the  addition of The Pointe. We thank all for pitching in during this transition time.

Thanks for sharing the love of the Valentine season each day with our residents!         Bev Zenor, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

An Introduction:

I moved to Sioux City over 25 years ago so I now call this my home.  With a   father that worked for the government, we packed up and moved many, many times but as my mother of ten said, “It’s not a big deal because you are always taking your best friends with you”.

I’ve always loved meeting and working with people but I discovered my passion for seniors while managing the Shire and the Martin Tower Apartments.  Having the opportunity to join the team at Sunrise Retirement Community has come at a perfect time in my life.  I have been a Sioux City Chamber Ambassador for 19 years as well as a board member of the Watchful Eye Foundation since it’s conception.  Along with a trail of other organizations I have always found a way to stay busy.

My husband Kelvin and I have been married for 19 years. He was born and raised a Nebraskan but is also a die hard Bronco fan. I also have three wonderful sons all living in different states.  Tony is Vice President of a financial firm as well as owning a restaurant in Aspen, Colorado.  He and his family live in Boulder.  Troy is a computer program developer living in Chicago with his family and the youngest Bret is a US Marine stationed in San Diego with his family.  Therefore my favorite thing to do is “travel” to see my nine grandchildren.

Cheryl Messerschmidt

Human Resources Director.

I’m a passionate believer in the open door policy so I look forward to meeting the great people affiliated with the Sunrise Retirement Community.

Chaplain

Chaplain’s Corner:  “The woman said to Jesus, “Sir you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?” John 4:11 (NRSV)

Dear Residents and Friends of Sunrise:

Jesus asked for water and was  refused. He responded by saying that if He was asked she would have received living water. Her response was the quotation given above. She was in for a big surprise from Jesus.  We also are surprised at times because we think we know so much only to learn that we have more to learn.  An example would be that as a child I thought it was great that by a wire we could talk to each other.  Now in the age of cell phones can you imagine having wires connected to every telephone?  We would be tied up in wire.

The woman’s life was changed by Jesus.  During Lent, the Christian community shares a message that changes the meaning of our life and it continues through the celebration of Holy Week.  May the hope that comes in this special week in March be experienced as we recall the mighty work of God.
