Resident Centered Care means residents can eat meals when they wish – in the dining room – or in their own room. It means we use more homelike furnishings, décor, color and lighting in our hallways, dining rooms and common areas. It means residents can go to bed and wake at the time they prefer, not to meet our time schedule.

 It's what works best for each resident and what they want.

With resident-centered care, we call living areas neighborhoods, not units.  In fact, in each of our five neighborhoods we have nurses and care teams that focus on their own small group of residents to increase communication and build relationships.

We cook meals from scratch in the kitchen, so residents can smell the food which makes eating more enjoyable. We garnish the plates and work to mirror restaurant-style dining.  If a resident doesn’t want something on the menu, the staff will work to get another meal choice – whether it's food at McDonalds or a steak.

And if a resident wants to go see the Christmas lights or a garden area, we work to make that happen, too.  

Since changing our focus to resident-centered care in 2004, we have educated our staff to meet the individual needs of each person.  In long-term care we’re learning that residents live happier, fuller lives when they are able to make more choices and decisions about their lifestyles. Families enjoy better relationships by being more involved in care. And employees experience a greater degree of participation and positive feedback with the residents.
