History of Sunrise
Sunrise opened its doors in 1959 as the Martin Luther Home, a non-profit organization to provide “specialized housing” to senior citizens and persons with handicaps. Business and church leaders helped lead a community-wide fund-raising campaign and received strong support from Lutheran churches in Siouxland. Those early leaders had the vision to establish Sunrise on a sprawling hill with room to grow. And grow it did! Nursing care for seniors was quickly added and the facility was renamed Sunrise Manor.

Over the years, services steadily expanded. Independent cottages were built. Assisted living services were added. Memory Care centers opened. Single homes were developed. The senior residential living community evolved into one serving seniors of all faiths who had nursing care and a variety of residential and care needs.

Today, Sunrise has expanded its living choices again. It has launched a bold and exciting new project - construction of a three-story, independent senior living community with 62 apartment homes. This new community now under development, The Pointe at Sunrise, will welcome seniors in early 2009.

More progress is planned. Our campus Master Plan calls for construction of a new state-of-the-art nursing and assisted living health center by the year 2011 – signaling more advances for long-term care in Siouxland.

A Non-profit That Reinvests in Our Residents
Sunrise Retirement Community is a totally locally-owned, non-profit organization guided by a local, volunteer community-oriented board of directors. As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, we continually invest our resources and any dollars left over at the end of a year back into services and care of our residents.

We are funded through Medicare and Medicaid, third party payers and private payment. We also welcome donations and sponsor vital fund-raising efforts to further enhance our services.
